Reason 271: He lived in an hotel room during the first season of House. (Cause he expected to be fired at any time)
Reason made by @RositaEsteves
-Craig Ferguson: Have you bought a house here? Have you got a place to live?
Hugh Laurie: Bought a house!!?
Craig Ferguson: Yeah you know
Hugh Laurie: Are you insane?… Are you?
Craig Ferguson: I am!
Hugh Laurie: No, no is only cause I just started doing this tv show, I’m still… I have not unpacked my suitcase yet, I’m still in a hotel room
Craig Ferguson: Really?
Hugh Laurie: I expect to be fired any day now, and I think that just the act of unpacking or buying a house or do anything that suggests that I’m permanently here… That’s you know, God is watching it all times and he would just “shhgft” and it’ll be gone… Is my view…-
-Craig Ferguson: So you… How do you do? Do you still live in London and you come over and do this…?
Hugh Laurie: Well I… I… That’s… You know, I suppose I have to say London is… London is where my heart is, you know I think of that
Craig Ferguson: Yeah of course
Hugh Laurie: because I’m still, I still having really good issues with the idea of being here, of this going on… I still thinking of it as a…
Craig Ferguson: I think the House show is probably going on…
Hugh Laurie: Do you think is gonna make it?
Craig Ferguson: I don’t think they’ll look in a cancellation
Hugh Laurie: It took me a year, I spent the first year in a hotel, everyone else was renting apartments and taking leases on places and I was… I lived out of a suitcase in a hotel cause I didn’t believe it will last and that feeling has sort of continued, I expect someone to come, you know, at any moment and go… “Mmm, no not good enough… You’re off”
Craig Ferguson: Mmm that’s not gonna happen…-
-“I often remark that the first season we did the show, I literally did not unpack my suitcase. I thought that any day, the phone would ring and I’d be on a plane back to England. I cannot believe that eight years have gone by, it’s sort of an amazing thing. It doesn’t happen, well, you know how rare it is, these things do not happen in an actor’s life and I can’t believe that I’m standing here looking back on that amount of time, that number of shows, that amount of stuff that amount of stuff that we’ve done. It’s incredible.”- Hugh Laurie
-For his part, the British actor says he didn’t expect House to last this long, and five seasons hence, he is still “superstitious” about the show’s success.
“I’m just convinced that the day we put down a deposit on a house is the day that we get cancelled. It’s just inevitable. In fact, the first season I was in a hotel for the first three months because I was so convinced that we were going to be gone. I didn’t even unpack. I had a half-empty suitcase. I thought it was going to be any day now…”- Hugh Laurie
