Reason 300: He is a perfectionist in everything he does. (Specially acting)
Reason made by @RositaEsteves and me.
-I: Is that still something that you get nervous about? Even if you’re Hugh Laurie you’re “Doctor House”…
Hugh Laurie: Oh my God yeah, yeah… well I get, I get nervous when I’m doing House, I get nervous at acting… Every day, oh yeah, every day when the cameras are rolling I’m nervous yeah, when someone says “Ok, here we go and action” I’m you know…
I: Wow I would never…
Hugh Laurie: Yeah yeah… I mean some days, some days…
I: Is seven seasons!!
Hugh Laurie: I know is crazy isn’t it?… And I keep expecting, I keep thinking “please can this go away?…” Cause I’m always thinking “I gotta get this right, I gotta get this right” but even worst when it is music and these are my heroes, this is people I’ve watched my whole life. I got to play the piano for Dr John, I mean ahh you know there is no greater piano player in the world as far as I can say… I just… Every time he touches the piano no matter what he is doing there is a feeling and an emotion that I get from his playing which is just overwhelming to me and that was an incredible moment to actually be playing for him… I also think he’s an great singer amm and I think that he’s… ahh I love his voice and I love what he did with that, with the song on the record, but ahh to be playing with these guys was just amazing.-
-Laurie’s famous perfectionism shone through as he answered questions on acting and re-watching his own series. Discussing the process of working in television, he lamented the speed with which productions had to be shot, allowing little time to capture correct takes and stated that he never watched several series of House because the review process was too agonizing. On factual accuracy however “verisimilitude isn’t something to strive for unless it produces the correct effect.” -
-Interviewer: How do you prepare for the show ? (about House MD)
Hugh Laurie: Well I just see the script and very quickly I get a sound in my head of… Like a piece of music, of how it should sound and weather the scene is fast or slow, and weather is loud or soft, what sort of tone House is trying to strike, I feel it is like a piece of music and I just have that in my head and then the rest of the day I’m trying to get what I have in my head and I usually don’t… Don’t… Don’t manage to do it… But… Mmm it is very… It can be very frustrating sometimes… -
-Hugh is a real perfectionist. He is a real hard worker. He doesn’t ever take a day off. Sometimes the writer will be on the set and say, ‘That’s okay’ and Hugh will be like, ‘No, no they missed this thing.’ He is a disciplined hardworker, which helps with all those little moments because he won’t let anything slide by. -
-Tavis: If you don’t like to hear yourself and don’t like to watch yourself, How, then, do you know whether you’re hitting the mark, whether you’re delivering what you want to deliver? Do you rely on others for that?
