Reason 325: The first day of the recording of his album he toasted with his musicians, since then he did it at every gig.
(In some interviews he says it was a 15 year old in some others he says it was a 21 year old Macallan.)

-“As the song was ending, a silver tray of drinks was placed on top of Hugh’s Piano. Hugh stood up. Walked over to the tray. Picked it up. And held it up in the air with one hand–like a waiter in a posh restaurant.
“I should explain. On the first day we met I thought I should do something to appease the gods of music and bond with my fellow musicians. Oh, perhaps you don’t know this, we made a record. When I first got together with these wonderful people standing behind me, I decided we needed some way of consecrating this great adventure. If there is concentrating in the air, I say whiskey will do the trick. On the first day we met, I took in a bottle of a very fine single malt whisky. A 15 year old Macallan.”
The cheering from the audience grew even louder once they heard what the brand name was.
“Halfway through playing, I offered to drink with them. Expecting that they would turn me down because they would all be recovering alcoholics. And not one of them did. So they are either not non alcoholics or they are not recovering. Ah, and so we toasted that days music. We toasted each subsequent days music. In fact, the toasting got earlier and earlier each day. So we are all becoming alcoholics. But it has taken on an almost… mystical significance for us.”
Hugh paused, reflecting momentarily on the memory.
“So it’s now our custom to rehydrate with a 15 year old Macallan. Yeah, we’re not sponsored by the way. We’re not looking for it. I’m just saying it’s a fine table. So if you excuse me.” -
The Late Late show with Craig Ferguson.
-Craig Ferguson: Do you smoke a lot of pot? I forget… Well you’re a musician is a fair question… Isn’t it?
Hugh Laurie: Yeah, it is, no, they were actually weirdly abstemious these musicians I… I took in the first day that we recorded together I took a bottle of, you will know what this means, a 21 year old Mcallen
Craig Ferguson: Yes!!
Hugh Laurie: In whiskey drinks that’s really “the stuff” and I thought, and I thought, and slightly hoped that they will all turn me down because they will all be recovering alcoholics cause they’re musicians…
Craig Ferguson: Ohh yeah there’s a lot of that yeahh…
Hugh Laurie: No, not one of them
Craig Ferguson: They all drank?
Hugh Laurie: They all drank, so they’re not alcoholics or they’re are not recovering one of the other. So we will toast every night on the stage with the Mcallen. It sound like a commercial for this whiskey, I don’t mean to do that, sorry, no, its a fine single one whiskey
Craig Ferguson: You can’t advertise whiskey on CBS, can you?… Well you can now apparently…
